The Whole Wheat
1 cup of wheat grain
1 teaspoon of salt
4 cups of boiling water
My grandmother from North Dakota used to call the whole wheat cereal- Mrs. The Whole Wheat. The whole wheat we were eating on Christmas Eve and this was a very festive meal- only the whole wheat grains, sprinkled with honey.
Our family knew that, if you cannot get the whole wheat grains from your grocer or in your shopping store- which may happen, you can probably secure it from a grain store. Pick over one cupful of the whole wheat grain, wash the grain under the cold water and soak the grain for no less than several hours in cold water to cover. We used to soak the wheat grain over the night- for about 12 hours. Drain the grain in the morning and add to four cupfuls of boiling water with one teaspoonful of salt, bring the grain to the boiling point and let it boil for twenty to thirty minutes, until it gets soft completely. Put the grain into fireless cooker and let it stand overnight. Reheat the grain in the morning and serve it with a cream and sugar. For the Christmas Eve our family served the wheat grain with honey.
