HERMITS

 HERMITS 

1/2 cup shortening 

3/4 cup sugar

2 well beaten eggs

2 teaspoons milk

1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon cloves

1/4 teaspoon mace

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 

1/2 cup chopped raisins 

A never-ending delight of girls of american college is the type of drop cooky known as  hermits, which are made as follows.

Cream together 1/2 cup shortening, and 3/4 cup sugar . Add 2 well beaten eggs and 2 teaspoons milk. Mix well. Sift together 13/4 cups flour, 1/4 teaspoon of each: of ground nutmeg.. cloves and mace 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and  add 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder. Add to first mixture, stirring in well. Add 1/2 cup chopped raisins and again stir well. Drop the mixture from teaspoon two inches apart on greased flat pan. Bake in a  moderate oven from 15 to 20 minutes.
