THE PURE FOOD LAW OF LOUISIANA

THE PURE FOOD LAW OF LOUISIANA

1908 - The Pure Food Law was adopted in the state of Louisiana- one of the Southern states of the United States of America. The Pure Food Law in the State of Louisiana took effect on October 1, 1908. What have the southerners considered to be the pure food, and what was considered to be the adulterated food more than 100 years ago in the USA?

What is adulterated confectionery product?

 1. By the Pure Food Law of the State of Louisiana, any confectionery product is  regarded as an adulterated if it contains those minerals:

terra alba( white clay, caolin)
barytes (salt of Barium)
talc
 or any mineral substance
or poisonous color
or flavor or any vinous malt
or spirituous liquor
or compound
or narcotic drug

The law is still effective and no narcotic drugs, no liquors, no any poisons are allowed in the  food sold for the public.

2. According to this law, the candy must not be wrapped in tin foil in direct contact with the candy. Means the candy had to be wrapped in the wax paper first and then only into the tin foil of the chocolate candies. Good morning, we are talking about the candy wrapping culture of the whole hundred years old.

3.For the fruit syrups for soda water(the factories and pharmacies)- one tenth of one per cent of benzoate of soda was permitted, which is 0.001, but the use of the saccharine was strictly prohibited. This means, the USA was more progressive than Germany that day, which allowed the saccharine as the sugar substitute. The USSR- was allowing the saccharine only in the case of special exceptions- year 1908.

4. Honey, sugars, and syrups mixed with glucose or other foreign substances(other sweeteners than natural sugar) had to be branded stating that these things have been added into the product.

5. Root beer  had to be manufactured from the roots, the bark, the leaves, the berries, the herbs or the oils extracted therefrom.

6. The caramel or other harmless ingredients shall not contain  any added salicylic acidm saccharin, boric acid, formaldehyde or their derivatives, or added other chemical preservatives or other coloring matters.

Today this law is even more complicated, but the beginning of the last century made the lawyers think of the health of the whole nation of the United States Of America.
