Spinach Picnic Style
1 pkg of Spinach or 1 can of canned spinach
1/2 cup of Butter
1 loaf of white Bread or the whole wheat bread
This is what our grandmother wrote to my husband from the city of NEW York in 1912. Her son was not into vegetables at all, not to speak about the spinach which is never a nice or attractive color. So, her letter was-
"WHEN I FOUND that my little boy aged two and a half did not care for spinach, I set to work to think of a successful disguise. Remembering that he loves the picnic idea of the sandwiches, we always take for our train lunch when we go to Grandma's. I tried spreading thin slices of whole wheat bread thickly with butter and putting a spoonful of spinach between, making a sandwich. As time went on, I put a thicker layer of spinach between the bread, and now he has for gotten his dislike of the vegetable, and asks for a regular plate helping, in addition to his sandwich." This was the simple trick our grandmothers shared with their relatives in California from the distant city of New York.
